Pyrite Mineral Specimen for SalePyrite

Rocks, Minerals, and FossilsPyrite (FeS2) is the most common sulfide mineral.  It occurs in hydrothermal vents, volcanic rocks, contact metamorphic rocks, and sedimentary rocks like shale and coal.  It's even found as a replacement mineral in fossils.  The most common crystal forms of Pyrite are cubic and octahedral.

The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word for fire, pyr, because Pyrite emits sparks when struck by iron.  It's easy to see where Pyrite got the nickname "Fool's Gold" — its brassy yellow color and relatively high density have fooled many a beginning prospector!  How to tell Fool's Gold from the real thing?  Gold is much softer, and will bend or dent under pressure, whereas brittle Pyrite will break.  Pyrite, though of lighter density than gold, is much harder, and can't be scratched with a fingernail or pocket knife.

The Pyrite specimens on this page are from Peru.
