Goniatite Fossils for SaleGoniatites

Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils Goniatites are an extinct group of marine cephalopods that belong to the subclass Ammonoidea.  Ammonoid shells were divided into chambers by divisions called septa, which created suture patterns where they joined the outer shell wall.  Ammonoids are classified on the basis of these suture patterns.

Goniatites have a zigzag pattern of smooth lobes and saddles, in contrast to the later group of ammonoids called Ammonites, which have a more intricate, fern-like suture pattern.  (The terms Ammonoid and Ammonite come from the Egyptian god Amun or Ammon, whose pair of ram horns resembled the shape of ammonoid shells.)

A Goniatite lived in the largest or body chamber, but had a thin tube called a siphuncle that ran through and connected its empty shell chambers.  The siphuncle allowed the Goniatite to control its buoyancy by moving water in or out of the chambers, causing the Goniatite to rise or descend through the ocean water column.  Although they look like modern-day Nautiloids, the closest living relatives of Goniatites are probably octopi, squid, and cuttlefish.

Goniatites flourished during the Paleozoic Era.  Because of their widespread distribution, they make excellent index fossils for determining the age of the rock layers where they are found.  The polished Goniatite fossils on this page are from Morocco and are about 370 million years old, dating back to the Devonian Period.
