Galena Mineral Crystal Specimen for SaleGalena

Rocks, Minerals, and FossilsGalena (PbS) typically forms within hydrothermal veins in igneous and metamorphic rocks.  Its silvery metallic luster, cubic crystals, and high density make Galena easy to identify.  Minerals which contain enough metal to extract easily are called ore minerals, and Galena (lead sulfide) has been a primary ore of lead since ancient times.

Due to its relatively low melting point, Galena may have been the first ore to be smelted.  Lead beads found in Turkey date back to 6500 BCE, and the Romans produced lead pipes for plumbing.  Both the word plumbing and the chemical symbol for lead, Pb, come from Plumbum, the Latin word for lead.  The primary use of lead today is in the manufacture of lead-acid batteries for cars.

Galena is a natural semiconductor which was used in early wireless communication as the crystal in crystal radio sets.  In some areas, Galena is mined for its silver content.  It is the official state mineral of both Missouri and Wisconsin.

The Galena specimens on this page are from the Viburnum Trend, or New Lead Belt of southeastern Missouri, home to some of the largest naturally occurring lead deposits in the world.
