Ammonite Fossils For SaleAmmonites

Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils Ammonites are an extinct group of marine cephalopods that belong to the subclass Ammonoidea.  Ammonoid shells were divided into chambers by divisions called septa, which created suture patterns where they joined the outer shell wall.  Ammonoids are classified on the basis of these suture patterns.

Ammonites have an intricate, fern-like suture pattern, in contrast to the earlier group of ammonoids called Goniatites, which have a zigzag pattern of smooth lobes and saddles.  The terms Ammonoid and Ammonite come from the Egyptian god Amun or Ammon, whose pair of ram horns resembled the shape of ammonoid shells.

An Ammonite lived in the largest or body chamber, but had a thin tube called a siphuncle that ran through and connected its empty shell chambers.  The siphuncle allowed the Ammonite to control its buoyancy by moving water in or out of the chambers, causing the Ammonite to rise or descend through the ocean water column.  Although they look like modern-day Nautiloids, the closest living relatives of Ammonites are probably octopi, squid, and cuttlefish.

Ammonites flourished during the Jurassic and Cretaceous.  Because of their widespread distribution, they make excellent index fossils for determining the age of the rock layers where they are found.  The cut and polished Ammonite pairs on this page (genus Cleoniceras) are from Madagascar.  They're about 120 million years old, dating back to the early Cretaceous Period.  You can see how minerals (mainly Calcite) have crystallized inside the chambered structure of each Ammonite's shell.
