Almandine Garnet Crystal Mineral SpecimenAlmandine (Garnet)

Rocks, Minerals, and FossilsAlmandine (Fe3Al2(SiO4)3) is an iron alumina garnet, usually deep red or reddish purple in color.  (It is also known incorrectly as Almandite.)  Garnets are a group of silicate minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives.  All species of garnets possess similar physical properties and crystal forms, but differ in chemical composition.

Almandine, like other garnets, typically forms rounded crystals with 12 rhombic or 24 trapezoidal faces, or combinations of these.  Almandine is found in metamorphic rocks like gneisses and mica schists, in igneous rocks, and occasionally as inclusions in diamond.

The name Almandine is a corruption of alabandicus, the name of a stone found and worked since ancient times at Alabanda, a town in what is now Turkey.

The Almandine specimens on this page, embedded in a mica schist matrix, are from the famous Garnet Ledge locality near Fort Wrangell, Alaska.  The listed dimensions refer to the size of the mica schist matrix.  The Almandine crystals themselves average 1/4" to 3/8" across.
